Okay, now for some cookie talk! These are giant cookies. For the first round, I baked the cookies as directed using dough straight from the bowl. The bake-sale worthy cookies weighed 6 ounces each, were sturdy, and spread to about 5 inches. I loved the appearance of the giant cookies, but I wanted to fit them into 4 inch cookie sleeves, so for the second round I used 5 oz portions of dough and made 10 cookies instead of 8. I also chilled the dough so that it would spread less and the cookies would be a little thicker. Those cookies fit just right.

I have a few recipes for Kitchen Sink Cookies, but this one may be the best yet. Not only does it call for “everything but the kitchen sink”, it makes eye popping, dramatically large cookies. The recipe is from Martha Stewart’s Baking Show on PBS, Martha Bakes.

I know, I know. So maybe, just maybe, you’ve consumed quite a few cookies as of late. (Me too.) But trust me, these Kitchen Sink Cookies fall faaaar from the cut-outs, shortbreads and rum balls of yestermonth. These guys, these golden-brown, heartily-stuffed little bites of deliciousness, they’re New Year’s resolution cookies.

One of my favorite parts of going home is that my dad always makes me his famous kitchen sink cookies. They’ve evolved over the years. What started as basic oatmeal chocolate chip cookies have turned into something way more delicious and I seriously start craving them the second I hop on a plane to Seattle. I make them plenty of times in my own kitchen, but for some reason they are always better when dad makes them. Kind of like his grilled cheese sandwiches. There’s just no arguing it. So nowadays they are stuffed with chocolate chips, M&M’s, dried cranberries and dried apricots. Genius.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever bought pretzels or potato chips, eaten most of the bag, stashed it away, and then promptly forgotten its existence until after purchasing more of said snack food. Maybe you hoard nuts. Or perhaps you have a few candy bars still leftover from Halloween. Kitchen sink cookies are for you, you, and you.

My favorite thing to bake is a 3 layer cake. It’s my favorite thing to eat to! Hard to choose because I love to bake cookies, pies, brownies, and yeast breads. My friends call me “Cupcake” but it is probably my least favorite thing to bake because they can be time consuming ( I often do a filling in the cupcakes to). I have been looking at a lot of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies lately. I need to give these a try. By the way, the Eric’s Cookie recipe you posted years ago are my sons’ favorite chocolate chip cookie. I often make them as cookie bars with M&M added at my 24 year olds request. Just made them last weekend. Or I make them huge, with a 1/4 cup of dough for each cookie. I will have to try to find Martha’s new show.

Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with nonstick baking mats or parchment paper. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together butter and both sugars. Beat in eggs, one at a time, until well blended. Stir in vanilla. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. With the mixer on low, gradually add to the butter mixture; continue mixing until well combined. Add the oats, coconut, toffee, chocolate, cherries, pecans, and pretzels and mix on low until just combined. Using a 2-inch ice-cream scoop, drop batter onto prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart. Press tops down with the bottom of a glass, sprayed with nonstick cookie spray, to flatten cookies evenly. Transfer baking sheets to oven and bake until golden, 12 to 14 minutes. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Those cookies look so good. I will definitely try them. As far as what I like to bake, I’d have to say cakes. No, wait. Pies. Maybe cookies. Has to be bread. Dang it. I can’t decide. There’s something about baking that it meditative, spiritual and, of course, deliciously satisfying. And I am a fan of Martha Bakes on PBS; I get useful tips, tricks and recipes from her show all the time (and from your site, too, of course). I have a feeling I’ll be doing some baking this weekend. Now, what to bake….

Those cookies have all the food groups in them-dairy, fruit, grains, protein and vegetables (I count chocolate as a vegetable). Who needs to eat anything else??? They look delicious. My favorite thing to bake is a toss up between brownies and cookies. I will have to go with brownies. I’ve seen Martha Bakes one time. I was glued to the tube watching her. She sure has come back strong since wearing stripes!!!

Sure, you could throw a handful of this and that from your pantry dregs, but a great kitchen sink cookie takes a little more thought. It’s about a balance of flavors and textures: You want something sweet, crunchy, salty, and chewy. Choose an add-in or two from each of these categories and you’ve got one tough-to-beat cookie. And if you’re feeling crazy (aren’t you?) a wildcard ingredient or two—like rose water, bacon, or instant coffee—doesn’t hurt things either.

But you can understand how those types of resolutions cause things to progress a little slowly around these parts. Dessert and January don’t always get along. But today is a special kind of January day, because in the case of these cookies, I think there may be a love connection.

Your dorm room desk lamp is a vital college supply. But don’t think you’ll have to use it only on your dorm desk. Feel free to place your desk lamp for college on your dorm shelf, dresser or another surface. No matter where you place it, that desk lamp for college will help bring some brightness to a dorm room that’s too dim or just needs a lighting boost. Dorm lights also help you to light up specific areas of your dorm. Even if that dorm room is small, your dorm desk or bedside could still use some extra light when you’re reading. To do just that, make sure you’ve included a light for dorms as part of your college stuff. This Gooseneck College Desk Lamp – Black can of course be bent to get the lighting angle you need. Since you’ll have to do plenty of reading in college, the least you can do is make the task easy on yourself. To do that, make sure you’ve included this handy college desk lamp as part of your supplies for college. Using only an overhead light can provide ample lighting, but it can’t always get the right angle for reading or even when you’re just sitting at your computer. Since dorm rooms are small, they often have only one or two windows, too. If your building faces away from the sun, it can be rather dim in your dorm room even during the daytime! So bring this cheap lamp for college to make sure you’ll at least have sufficient lighting.
college desk lamp 3

Unless you add to your college furniture, there will be only two seats in your dorm room. Your school-provided semi-comfortable dorm desk chair and your dorm bed. Of those two areas, they’ll probably be both slightly off center from the middle of your room, which is where that overhead light will hang. In the corner of your dorm room, things can get a bit dark and dim. The solution? Simple. Include a dorm room desk lamp like this Gooseneck College Desk Lamp – White as part of your dorm room supplies. This handy, cheap lamp for college will bring light to any dim corner of your dorm.Conversely, if it’s too bright in your dorm room, provide your room with some lighting alternatives. To do that, add a dorm light or two. Flip off that overhead light and flip on this college desk lamp. Some dimmer lighting is perfect when you’re watching a movie, or if you’re still studying while your roommate’s sleeping, this college item is just the dorm supply you’ll need. This light plugs in for power, meaning you won’t have to rely on power-draining and money-wasting batteries. And while it’s a basic dorm item, this college lamp can go a long way in making dorm room living that much more convenient and bright.

Roman Chair Exercise

This piece of exercise equipment is most well-known as a roman chair but is also commonly referred to as a hyperextension bench. Because of its design, it allows a person to do exercises targeting the abdominal muscles, obliques, and back. You do not typically see any upper body exercises being performed using this equipment. One variation that you find is a 45-degree roman chair/hyperextension bench versus a 90-degree roman chair/hyperextension bench. The difference in angle between the two has an impact on how the muscles in the abdomen, back and obliques are conditioned given the position of the body’s weight while exercising. Read our Top 5 Roman Chair/Hyperextension Bench Review!

Many pieces of exercise equipment have one exercise they are made for and that is all you can use them for. Other pieces of equipment are made for a single exercise, but with using additional equipment such as weights or other items, they can be used for multiple exercises. This is what we call versatility – the ability to use a piece of exercise equipment for multiple things. Sometimes, it may be that the design of the equipment itself makes it very useful for multiple exercises. This is also an example of versatility. While the power tower, a variation on the traditional roman chair, is very versatile, the roman chair squat, or sissy squat, is not. This is important to consider when making a purchase. Buy what meets your needs and helps you reach your goals!
roman chair exercise 2

The much-neglected erector spinae that run up and down your back are essential for good posture, opposing your ab muscles to keep your middle back from rounding. Roman chair exercises for back muscles can be replaced with the back extension machine at your gym, front-lying supermans — lifting shoulders and hips at the same time — on a mat or birddogs done by extending the opposite arm and leg from a hands-and-knees position. Partial supermans on a stability ball, where you leave your feet on the ground and lift only your upper body, closely simulate the Roman chair exercise. Warning: if you’re passing on the Roman chair because it churns your stomach juices, skip the supermans on the ball.
roman chair exercise 3

As with regular Roman chair crunches, Roman chair crunch twists require muscle work before the move even begins, so to increase the challenge on a stability ball, try holding a weight plate in front of your chest. You can also do this on a declined bench. Then try lateral lifts over a stability ball. Lying on your side with the ball at the bend of your waist, anchor your feet against a wall, then lift yourself laterally. Similar to doing these on a Roman chair, this exercise works not just your obliques but the deeper quadratus lumborum.

Durability is important to consider when you want to buy a roman chair or any other exercise equipment. The more sturdy and durable it is, the longer it will last you and the more it will stand up to hardcore use. Usually, the more durable a piece of equipment is, the more expensive it can be because of the heavier duty, sometimes higher quality materials used. Apart from durability, ease of use is important. Many pieces of exercise equipment require you to assemble them yourself. Fortunately, the roman chair and its variations are all very easy to assemble. Many options available are durable enough to meet the needs of the casual user and there are very heavy duty options for anyone looking to purchase the equipment for a gym or use in a shared space.
roman chair exercise 7

The Roman chair is a piece of exercise equipment. The equipment is mainly used for the lower back, but can also target the gluteal muscles, hamstring and abdominals. The definition of the equipment, and what ‘Roman chair exercise’ specifically means, is not clear.
roman chair exercise 8

For a more advanced exercise, try the Roman chair twist. For this move, sit on the top bench of the Roman chair and hook your feet under the smaller pad. Hold a medicine ball, weight plate or dumbbell extended out in front of your chest. Lean back until you feel your abs brace to keep you supported and slowly twist side to side.
roman chair exercise 9

This piece of exercise equipment is sometimes referred to as a “decline roman chair“, but is more commonly known as a sit-up bench, or ab bench. It is a classic and ca be found in almost any gym. Using the sit-up bench will allow you to do very focused exercises that can strengthen your abdominal and oblique muscles. From boxers and ball players to fitness models, an ab bench will do exactly what its designed to do – give you ripped abs. Read our Top 5 Decline Roman Chair/Sit-Up Bench Review!

While we are not sure how this piece of exercise equipment got its name, we are sure that anyone who can complete a few sets on a roman chair squat is not a sissy. Using the sissy squat allows you to do very focused exercises that can strengthen your abdominal, oblique and leg muscles. These pieces of exercise equipment are not found in all gyms, but do offer a very rigorous workout for those interested in building leg and core muscles.

You could very easily break the bank buying specialized exercise equipment. You can also not spend enough and end up with cheap equipment that is not very durable and breaks before you get the appropriate amount of use from it. When you are considering the purchase of exercise equipment like the roman chair or any other item, decide what your budget is and buy the most durable, versatile piece of equipment you can that will help you reach your goals.
roman chair exercise 12

Various exercises have been called “Roman chair.” The most common or earliest historical meaning for the movement is not clear. Bodyweight can provide significant resistance in all variations, and additional weight can be added to increase difficulty. Mainly two actions are followed while exercising with a “Roman chair”—Inhale and Exhale. Inhale is to bend forward from the hips, lowering the chest towards the floor, while keeping the lower neck straight. Exhale is to straighten the body to return to the start position to complete one rep.
roman chair exercise 13

One type of exercise done on a Roman chair is a type of lower-back hyperextension performed to strengthen the lower back, especially the erector spinae. The chair holds a person in place, lying prone, as he or she bends at the waist and then extends the body upward.
roman chair exercise 14

This piece of exercise equipment allows the user to do exercises targeting the abdominal muscles, obliques, and legs. Very often, you find this roman chair component integrated with a lateral pull-up bar in a “power tower”. The combination allows for a total body workout consisting entirely of isometric exercises, or exercises that use only the body’s weight as resistance. If this is the machine you were looking for, we recommend purchasing a power tower. Read our Top 5 Power Tower Review!
roman chair exercise 15

An exercise more commonly referred to as the wall sit, an isometric movement to build strength in the quadriceps, may also be called the Roman chair. It involves a person with their back against the wall, pushing into it using the action of knee extension. Even though it is called a “sit”, the hips are actually not being held up by sitting on something. Rather, the body is held up via a combination of weight borne on the feet and friction created with the wall by exerting pressure against it.
roman chair exercise 16

Leg presses, squats and lunges work your quads as well as your hamstrings and glutes, but if you’re looking for something more in line with Roman chair exercises, try lower back extensions. Lie face-down on a mat, resting your chin on your hands. With your legs extended and just about hip-width apart, concentrate on squeezing your butt muscles to lift your legs and hips — ever so slightly — off the floor. Try a similar exercise with a stability ball by placing your hands on the floor — arms extended — and your hips on the ball. With your legs extended, start with your feet on the floor, then squeeze your glutes to lift your legs off the floor.

Get rid of the gnats’ food supply. Like so many other insects, gnats feed primarily upon the food scraps you leave out in the open. The best solution to preventing gnats is to not “feed” them in the first place. By cleaning your kitchen and dining room regularly and quickly disposing of leftover food scraps and cooking remains, you can prevent gnats from invading your house before they ever become a problem. When you store food, make sure it is in an airtight or wrapped container within a sealed cabinet or refrigerator. Keep fruit in the fridge, to prevent it from becoming overripe and attracting gnats. Never leave dirty dishes in the sink as the scraps of food stuck to them can attract gnats. Wash dishes immediately after use and cover the dish rack with a clean, dry towel.
how to kill gnats in the kitchen 4

Tips There is a vast variety of gnat species which are hard to identify and rarely worth the trouble. Once you have figured out where the gnats are coming from, you should be able to use one of the methods outlined above to get rid of them, regardless of what type of gnats they are. I used half a cup of lemon beer and put a drop or two of regular non-scented dish soap in it. I set up four of these traps through out my house. I pit ammonia down the drains and let it sit for two hours as well before rinsing the drains. All the gnats were gone by the next morning. Seal house plants in a trash bag and leave it for several days. The gnats will die off, and the plant will be fine. Take one tablespoon of lemon juice and some Windex in a cup. Get them to fall in and they will die. If you have a severe gnat infestation where the gnats are forming tornadoes over the sink drain, suck them up with a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment. This will wipe them out faster than a liquid trap, is non-toxic, and doesn’t stink like vinegar. With daily persistence, you’ll kill them faster than they can breed, and they’ll be gone in a week.

Queen Anne Dining Room Chairs

THE ROYAL HISTORY OF QUEEN ANNE FURNITURE It might not top the list of those pieces that are “having a moment,” but in our hearts of hearts, we’ll always save a place for Queen Anne style furniture. A name applied to elegant, doe-legged furniture constructed throughout the 18th Century, Queen Anne furniture is about as traditional as it gets, but thanks to its graceful-but-simple forms, it maintains an accessibility that lends it to both formal and eclectic interiors alike. To shed more light on Queen Anne furniture (which is often overshadowed by its heir, Chippendale furniture), we’re delving into both the history of Queen Anne furniture, along with a run-down of its signature attributes. From cabriole legs to “Japanning,” this is Queen Anne furniture 101. THE QUEEN ANNE STORY A royal story always has its fair share of juice, and the story of Queen Anne furniture is no exception. To begin, the style was named for Queen Anne, but the years in which she reigned don’t actually correlate to Queen Anne furniture production. While Queen Anne ruled from 1702 to 1714, the furniture bearing her name was primarily produced from the 1720s until the 1760s. Additionally, these years mostly pertain to American-made Queen Anne furniture and not European-made. As a whole, Queen Anne furniture was favored by Americans. While Europeans did dabble in the style, it is generally referred to as Georgian furniture (which Americans also have, though it refers to an entirely different, later style) and the affair was fairly short-lived. So how did Queen Anne furniture come to assume it’s royal title in America? Well, Queen Anne was an avid tea drinker and introduced the concept of “having a spot of tea” to the world. To accommodate the trend, furniture craftsman began producing small, moveable furniture pieces like tea tables and drop-leaf side tables. Since the pieces were unlike any furniture that came before it, they warranted both a new style and a new name. While the British favored the term Georgian (in tribute to Queen Anne’s successors—George I, II, and III), Americans preferred to call it Queen Anne furniture. Why? Well, origins are murky, but some muse that it may be because newly-colonized Americans were resistant to naming anything in even remote resemblance to King George III (who helped to spur that little thing called the American Revolution). Still, others historians feel that curvy, leggy Queen Anne furniture simply demanded a feminine-sounding name, which Queen Anne definitely is. Worth noting here is that Queen Anne furniture was named only after the fact, during its revival in the early 1800s. Queen Anne furniture itself is a mix of Baroque, classical, and Asian styles. Its emergence signified a shift in furniture, as Queen Anne was slimmer and more compact than the Baroque furniture that came before it. It was truly an overthrow of archaic, passé furniture ideals if you will—a revolution all its own. THE ATTRIBUTES OF QUEEN ANNE FURNITURE If there’s one dominate feature of Queen Anne furniture it’s that cabriole leg. Elegant and fluid, the cabriole leg features a bump-out that resembles a knee, and an inward curving “ankle.” The effect? A leg that resembles that of a gazelle, deer, or a dog. Most Queen Anne cabriole legs end in a pad foot, but spade, trifid, and ball-and-claw feet can also be found. Worth noting is that ball-and-claw feet are more often indicative of Chippendale furniture than Queen Anne furniture, but some late Queen Anne styles do showcase the pterodactyl-like grips. Beyond the cabriole legs, Queen Anne furniture is recognizable for its deep, dark wood finishes—the result of walnut wood construction. While maple, pine, ash, and tulip woods were used as well, walnut was the primary choice due to its resemblance to covetable, Caribbean mahogany. While mahogany was available in port cities, the distribution radius was low, and so most American builders resorted to walnut, which was then stained to resemble mahogany. Ingenious, right? Most Queen Anne furniture also showcases some amount of carving. Fan radials and shell motifs are common finds on Queen Anne armoires and Queen Anne cabinets, while Queen Anne tables often showcase scalloped aprons. But the undeniable jewel when it comes to carved Queen Anne furniture? The Queen Anne chair. Queen Anne chairs showcase lovely cabriole legs and upholstered seats, but even these pretty elements are upstaged by Queen Anne chairs’ curvaceous back splats. Often likened to a shapely vase or urn, Queen Anne chair’s back splats are slinky and sensuous, following no particular pattern. And because the chair back is framed, the negative space created by the splat is just as enticing as the splat itself. The result makes hunting for Queen Anne furniture all the more thrilling, as it can feel like options are endless. Many attribute Queen Anne style to the influence of antique Chinese corner chairs which showcased yoke-shaped top rails and splats. Likewise, other Asian influence can be seen in the prevalence of delicate, Oriental-themed paintings that adorn Queen Anne case pieces like dressers and secretary desks. Deemed “Japanning,” the idea was to imitate the whispery Eastern lacquer work that appeared on everything from vases to cabinets. While only featured on a small percentage of Queen Anne furniture, “Japanned” furniture is a staple of the Queen Anne style, and any period home should consider factoring at least one of these exquisite pieces onto their list of must-haves.
